Mabel Paine GATE Program
At Mabel Paine, identified 4th and 5th grade GATE students are thoughtfully clustered in classrooms at each grade level to ensure they learn alongside intellectual peers and receive instruction designed to meet their advanced academic needs.
All upper grade teachers are GATE certified and highly trained in research-based strategies and instructional methods that support gifted learners. In our GATE cluster classrooms, teachers provide differentiated instruction across all subject areas so that students are appropriately challenged and supported based on their individual strengths, readiness levels, and learning needs.
In addition to daily differentiated instruction, students participate in enrichment and acceleration opportunities that deepen grade-level learning while encouraging creativity, collaboration, and higher-level thinking. These unique learning experiences help students strengthen their critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, and innovation skills through engaging projects such as:
- Class newspapers
- Advanced book clubs
- Genius Hour projects
- Open-ended research and inquiry-based learning experiences
As an AVID Elementary School, Mabel Paine also helps students build strong habits for long-term academic success. Students are explicitly taught organizational skills, goal setting, inquiry strategies, and higher-level reading and writing techniques that support college and career readiness. These skills include:
- Two- and three-column note-taking
- Goal setting and reflection
- Inquiry-based learning
- Collaborative discussion
- Advanced reading and writing strategies
Beyond the classroom, students participate in grade-level academies that provide rich, hands-on opportunities for exploration and creativity:
- 3rd Grade Academy: Students explore the visual arts by creating masterpieces inspired by famous artists while learning about art history, artistic styles, and a variety of media and techniques.
- 4th Grade Academy: Students strengthen their engineering and STEM skills through hands-on design challenges and STEM-based kits that promote innovation and problem solving.
- 5th Grade Academy: Students engage in Shakespearean studies and mock trials, developing advanced speaking, reading, writing, and critical thinking skills through performance, analysis, and debate.
At Mabel Paine, we are proud to be a school that celebrates diverse learning styles, nurtures individual strengths, and promotes growth in independent thinking. Our GATE program is designed to ensure students are not simply given more work, but are provided with the right level of challenge, enrichment, and support so they can thrive academically, socially, and creatively.
