GATE (Gifted & Talented Education)

The identified 4th and 5th grade G.A.T.E. students at Mabel Paine are clustered in one classroom at each level. The teachers in the classes are highly trained in specific methods and strategies to meet the needs of gifted learners. In the G.A.T.E. cluster class, the curriculum and assignments are differentiated across the curriculum in order to meet the individual needs of the students. In addition, they are given the opportunity to participate in unique learning experiences that not only enrich and accelerate the grade level curriculum but allow them to stretch their creativity and problem solving skills with projects such as class newspapers, higher level Book Clubs, and Genius Hour Projects.

Mabel Paine has recently been named an AVID elementary school, and to that end, students are taught organizational techniques and learning strategies such as two and three column note taking, goal setting, inquiry, and higher level reading and writing strategies that will prepare them for college and career readiness. In addition to the challenging opportunities in class, the students are also invited to participate in an after-school program that meets bimonthly called EXCEL – Engaging, ‘Xtraordinary, Creative, Enthusiastic, Learners. Twice a month, EXCEL students meet with one of the G.A.T.E. teachers to participate in activities and lessons such as STEM challenges, educational games, and science and reading fair projects.
